Watch Big and Small everyday on BBC One (15.05) and on the CBeebies channel (16.00 weekdays, 11.20 and 16.20 at weekends)
Big and Small follows the adventures of two best friends who couldn’t be more different. Big is big, thoughtful and very patient, whilst Small is small, vivacious and very, very messy. Despite their differences, their friendship is defined by tolerance, kindness and lots of laughter. The show aims to open children’s minds to a variety of outlooks on the world and encourage them to appreciate that people have many different ideas and opinions - and it does so in the most hilarious way possible.
BIG
Big is big, gentle, kind, a little dreamy, occasionally indecisive and annoyingly tidy. He’s easily distracted, which sometimes drives Small crazy. Big likes to watch things grow. He also likes to count, and read, and look at the stars. And he loves to sing and dance.
But mostly Big loves to build. He has 55 projects in the works (at last count), but none are anywhere near completion. Big is famous for taking things apart and forgetting to put them back. He gets grand ideas for inventions that make no sense. But that’s okay. Big is pretty mellow. Small hates mellow, and is constantly trying to goad Big into Great Feats and Decisive Actions. Big, for his part, wishes Small would relax a little bit. But that’s why they make such a great team. If you were lost in the woods, for instance, you’d want a thinker AND a doer.
Getting lost in the woods is all part of Big’s new world. Prior to Small’s arrival, Big didn’t leave home much. His favorite kind of day was comfortingly routine. Big didn’t really know what lay beyond his home, his garden and his pond until Small came into his life.
SMALL
You know your cousin Danny? The one who came for your birthday party then stayed for the whole weekend, who ate with his fingers, and hogged the bathroom and took the upper bunk without asking, but told the greatest stories? Small is like that cousin, the kind of guy you love to have around, even if he sometimes drives you crazy. Small is loud and exuberant and always in a hurry. He acts first and thinks later. He’s melodramatic and boastful, but also a great story-teller and adventurer.
Small enjoys being small. It suits his personality. He’s like the kid who won’t walk to school on the sidewalk, but walks on the wall instead, and takes it higher and higher, then grabs the tree branch and jumps over the gate, almost falling, then sees a snake and sets up an obstacle course for it to crawl through before deciding to adopt it as a pet. Life is a huge, grand adventure, even if it does take him 20 extra minutes to get to anywhere.
Big is fond of Small, but he sometimes wishes Small understood the concept of napping, or could sit still for more than 22 seconds, or would think before saying something rude. But Small is always sorry for his many mistakes and he’s always forgiven.
Small didn’t always live with Big. He used to travel quite a bit, looking for adventure, looking for a home. He’s got a suitcase jammed with souvenirs and a photo album crammed with photos of things he’s done, or might have done, or thought about doing. But now he’s found Big and now he’s home.
